Newspaper clippings, photographic prints, correspondence, postcards, greeting cards, legal documents and personal memorabilia pertain to Miami Area history and the history of the Huddleston family. The collection is particularly rich in vivid handwritten descriptions and newspaper obituaries of Miami pioneers who died in the 1950s. Also included are newspaper accounts of historic buildings and personalities, as well as the social activities of members of pioneer families, and of the meetings of the Miami Pioneers group.

Scrapbook marked "Finished 1955" in Box 6 has much of the Huddleston family material, including Farmer City, Illinois, newspaper clippings.

The bulk of the collection are 5x7 photographic prints. Views are of places, building exteriors, events and people in Miami, Miami Beach, and South Florida. Examples of topics include: clearing mangroves on Miami Beach and construction of the Overseas Highway; Seminole and Miccosukee Indians, mainly at Musa Isle and along the Tamiami Trail; present-day Everglades National Park, Tamiami Trail and environs, present-day Big Cypress National Preserve, and Ft. Jefferson (Dry Tortugas).

Corresponding negatives exist for most of the photographic prints. 5x7 inch negatives include original safety negatives and direct duplicate negatives made from nitrate-based negatives. 4x5 negaives include original safety negatives, direct duplicate negatives made from nitrate-based negatives, and copy negatives made from the 5x7 prints.

Matlack kept several logs, which record number, date photographed, and, for about half the entries, brief subject. The photographer's logs are in several original, post-bound binders.

Topical and biographical folders that were selected from files A-P of the Coral Gables Times Guide photograph morgue. The folders contain black-and-white photographic prints, accompanied by some newspaper clippings and ephemera. The folder headings were created by the newspaper's staff.

While most topics pertain to Coral Gables, other cities and communities are also represented, including Coconut Grove, Kendall, South Miami and South Dade.

Donn Whitehead Collection - circa 1945-1981

The collection contains  a series of Whitehead’s diaries spanning the period of 1938 to 1981 (1941-1949 are not included). The diaries are filled with detailed, if taciturn, descriptions of Whitehead’s daily activities; every action, from eating breakfast to getting his car serviced, is given attention in the diaries’ pages. For example, each trip to and from Miami Beach is described, as well as Whitehead’s trips to South Florida’s restaurants and attractions.

The two photo albums in the collection are the product of a 1951 trip through Florida and the Keys; they offer interesting views of typical tourist destinations during the period. A series of color photographic slides from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s are concentrated solely on South Florida. Subject matter include views of Miami International Airport, Crandon Park, Hialeah Park, Lincoln Road, and a fashion parade along Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road.

Exhibition-quality photographic prints of buildings designed by architect Igor B. Polevitsky between 1934 and the mid-1960s. Photographers include Samuel H. Gottscho, Rudi Rada, and Ernest Graham. Includes views of Miami Beach and Miami residences (Birdcage house), Miami Beach hotels (Shelbourne, Albion, etc.), Havana hotels (Havana Biltmore, Havana Riviera), automotive businesses (car dealerships, gas stations, General Tires), retail shops (jewelry and shoe stores), offices (Kislak Mortgage, etc.), and other businesses (Arthur Murray, restaurants).

Materials pertain to the Merrill family, their shipbuilding businesses in Jacksonville and Miami, and  the early development of Miami Beach.

The collection holds two photograph albums with images of Merrill family activiites and the Merrill-Stevens shipbuilding business in Jacksonville. A group of loose photographs mostly show views of the development of infrastructure and construction on Miami Beach. Several of the Miami Beach images are captioned.

Other materials include a bound set of Quarter - Deck (Nov. 1942-Aug. 1945), which was publilshed for the employees of the St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company, and a brochure for Merrill-Stevens Dry Dock Company in Miami.

Photographs show completed residences designed by Robert Fitch Smith. An album of photos and some newspaper clippings document the building of the" Bungalow of Tomorrow" for the Miami Builders' Exchange second annual Better Homes Exposition. A copy of "Architecture and Design", vol. v, no. 15 (d), August 1941 is devoted to Smith's work. A sketch book shows projects in various stages of completion with cost details, and his notes pertaining to bloodlines for the pigeons he raised as a hobby.

Drawings include the Doc Thomas house in South Miami, Interama sketches, the University Church (Coral Gables) and dwellings. The Doc Thomas house is noted on the blueprint as the Hayes Thomas House. Located at 5530 Sunset Drive serves as the headquarters for the Tropical Audubon Society.

The drawings of the interiors with furnishings were done for the Smith family house on Kirk Street in Coconut Grove, ca. 1952. Drawings and sketches for residences include interiors with furnishings. A blueprint for the Doc Thomas House in South Maimi, watercolor renderings for a church and sketches for the Interama project.

Thelma Peters papers - 1871-1989

The Thelma Peters Papers document various aspects of her career. Research files contain valuable information on Miami's early history, while her professional correspondence offers biographical insight into Peters' careers as teacher and pioneering historian. Similarly personal correspondence, photographic slides, and diary and notebook entries offer a good deal of information on the Caribbean and Latin America. Together they reveal that, even when not in her beloved South Florida, Thelma Peters possessed an inquisitive mind and an eye for detail.

The papers contain correspondence, research, literary manuscripts, photographs and slides pertaining to Dr. Peters' career and research. Copies of first hand accounts are also included, for example, the section of Parson's diary pertaining to George Buck's 1895 cruise. One box contains periodicals acquired by William H. Gleason while living at Biscayne (present-day Miami Shores); Gleason participated in state and local politics during Reconstruction.
