Views of the FEC Key West Extension construction and dismantling, Long Key Fishing Camp, Bahia Honda Bridge, Henry Flagler on first train into Key West, 1909 Key West hurricane and the construction of the Overseas Highway. One group shows some Miami Beach schools being constructed under the aegis of the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works, a New Deal Program. The postcards are Miami area views, and includes images of the Royal Palm Hotel and the Fair building.

Some government publications and newsletters from various county and state organizations are also included.

 

Biographical Note: Miami-Dade County as a Hialeah Councilman, Dade County Commissioner, State Representative in the Florida House of Representatives and elected circuit court judge. As commissioner, Whitworth secured federal funds to reimburse the county for medical aid given to Cuban refugees at Jackson Memorial Hospital. During his term as State Representative he was instrumental in the successful efforts to reform the state's judicial system and in the 1971 session, he sponsored, among others, two major bills that were signed into law. One was the marijuana felony-misdemeanor bill and the other, the nonpartisan election of judges bill

This series of 35mm, 110, and 4x5 photographic prints document the work of the Dade County Parks and Recreation Department during the 1960s and 1970s. Included are images of the construction of recreational facilities (e.g., swimming pools), arts and crafts shows, festivals, sports events, camping, and employee activities.

Parks depicted include Camp Owaissa Bauer, Crandon Park, Matheson Hammock, Vizcaya, Suniland, Dade County Auditorium, Brownsville pool, Greynolds Park, Museum of Science, Palmetto Golf Course, Elliott Key Park (now Biscayne National Park), Crandon Park Zoo, Haulover Beach, Homestead Bayfront Park, Redland Fruit and Spice Park, Richmond Park, Trail Glades Shooting Range, Virginia Beach, and others.

Sports and recreation depicted include baton twirling, bowling, golf, picnics, camping, Junior Orange Bowl parade, flower shows, beauty pageants, Showmobile presentations, synchronized swimming, etc. (The Showmobile was a trailer converting into a portable stage.)

Hurricane and storm damage includes Flora (1963), Cleo (1964), Betsy (1965), and Inez (1966).

A framed handwritten poem, "The Gift Outright," dedicated to the Newtons, is the centerpiece of this small and lovingly assembled collection celebrating the works and life of Robert Frost, and his connection with Florida over the many winters he spent in Key West. Includes several of his privately printed poems (some of which are inscribed or signed), signed copies of his collected poems, correspondence (chiefly from his friend Kathleen Morrison to Miss Jessie regarding Frost), photographs and guest books. Other materials include newspaper clippings, first day covers, programs, and other ephemera pertaining to Frost.

Photographs shot by Chris Hansen. The collection contains photographic prints, negatives, and slides, along with a folder of clippings and lists pertaining to some of the subjects. Images include celebrities and places in Miami/Miami Beach, the Goodyear Blimp, glamour photography, Dodge Island, and the Miami Serpentarium.

The bulk of the images are of models, beauty contestants, celebrities, actors, actresses and Miami Beach social events. Other images show sporting activities, boats and ships such as the SS Florida. Among those photographed were Jayne Mansfield, Red Skelton, Jimmy Durante, Bill Haast, and President John F. Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy. One album has newspaper clippings and another has slides of the events, including the Republican National Convention in 1972.

The Shafer collection consists of approximately .5 cubic foot of manuscripts, research notes, newsletters, correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, pamphlets, and ephemera.

A substantial portion of the collection, approximately 1 cubic foot, is composed of over 1,000 photographic prints and negatives, primarily of antique bottles and archaeological artifacts and dig sites. In addition, Shafer and his family  are the subject of some of these photographs. The prints range in size from contact sheets to 11 x 14 inches and include both color and black-and-white images. Also among the items in the collection are some slides and a color transparency.

Includes an unsigned typescript letter from Theodore Roosevelt, several photographs of turn of the century stores in Key West and Miami, material on the congregations of Rodeph Sholom in Key West and Beth David in Miami (first called B'Nai Zion), and photographs of Cuban leaders of the late 1800s, including Jose Marti.
