Charlton W. Tebeau Research Papers - 1815-1969

The papers contain correspondence, notes and speeches by Dr. Tebeau, typescripts and photocopies on Florida topics, including primary sources (diaries, memoirs, etc.) and secondary sources (articles by students of his history classes and fellow historians). Most, but not all, relate to the Everglades or the Depression of the 1930s. Some documents related to the 1972 Master's Hearing on the dispute over federal vs. state control of Florida Bay, for which Dr. Tebeau acted as an expert witness.

Tamiami Trail Scrapbook: Newspaper clippings, including maps and photographs, have information on the then recently constructed road between Tampa and Miami, and the southwest Florida communities it crossed. Most of the clippings are dated 1926-1928, when the Trail was formally opened. Also included are clippings on Barron Collier, at the time of his death in 1939.

Research notes for Synagogue in the central city. Notes on cards formed part of Dr. Tebeau's research for his book: Synagogue in the central city : Temple Israel of Greater Miami, 1922-1972. Temple Israel celebrated 50 years of existence in 1972. As part of the anniversary, he was selected to write a history of Miami's first Reform Jewish congregation. Dr. Tebeau, was assisted by Marcia Kanner in the preparation of the manuscript.

The Jaudon papers contain a large amount of business correspondence and some personal correspondence. Within the files are business brochures, financial papers, and newspaper clippings. See Biographical Note for summaries of Jaudon’s projects, all of which are represented in the papers.

Five letters and four copies relating to the sale of land and the expansion of Snapper Creek Canal for drainage. Jaudon correspondents include Thomas F. West, Attorney General, and F.C. Elliott, Chief Drainage Engineer.

Collection covers committee, agency and individual writings on the Everglades, the Biscayne aquifer, Lake Okeechobee, Biscayne Bay, urban growth and farming impacts on water resources, saltwater intrusion, flood control, and related water issues. Other material included: South Florida (later Variety, now Miami) Children's Hospital under construction; a 1960 plan to revitalize Miami's downtown business district, and a 1976 Dade County Public Schools report.

Folder 3 in box 2 gives a summary of events pertaining to documents in boxes 1 and 2.

Correspondence, pamphlets, maps, reports, newsclippings and articles pertain to archaeology and history of Florida and the Caribbean. Includes drafts of articles by various authors submitted to The Florida Anthropologist and related correspondence; and miscellaneous records and correspondence for several organizations. Magazine articles pertaining to hunting and fishing in Florida also form part of the collection.
