Records of the organizational, community activities and property development. Includes board minutes, reports, correspondence with builders, blue prints, photographic prints, feasibility studies, deeds of trusts and agreements with residential hotels.

The records include minutes from board meetings and various committee meetings, reports to the national board and personnel data. The information regarding new construction contains correspondence with builders, blueprints, photographic prints, property feasibility analysis, surveys, deeds of trust and agreements with residential hotels. The collection also contains books and magazines published by the Women’s Press. Also encompassed in the collection are newspaper clippings and scrapbooks.

Hanna Apartments and Gilbert residence architectural records - 1926-1973

The collection contains approximately 100 blueprints, augmented by architectural specifications. Blueprints include those from Keihnel & Elliott’s original design for the Gilbert residence (1926), alterations made by Robert Law Reed & Associates (1948) and an addition made by Manfred Ungaro (1962).

The files contain notes, invoices, receipts and ephemera concerning appliances and building work.  Box 1 contains records belonging to Mrs. Gilbert and Box 2 holds the papers of Dr. and Mrs. Hanna.

Correspondence and documents pertain to ecological and environmental concerns for the mangrove swamp, canal, and surrounding area on the Hector property situated on Biscayne Bay at St. Gaudens Road in Coconut Grove. Supporting documents include land appraisals, land purchase contracts, permits, maps and designs. A set of photographic prints show damage to the property from Hurricane Andrew.

Scrapbooks and folders contain newspaper clippings, correspondence, campaign materials and photographic prints pertaining to Whitworth's involvement in public life and his social activities. Some government publications and newsletters from various county and state organizations are also included.

 

Biographical Note: Miami-Dade County as a Hialeah Councilman, Dade County Commissioner, State Representative in the Florida House of Representatives and elected circuit court judge. As commissioner, Whitworth secured federal funds to reimburse the county for medical aid given to Cuban refugees at Jackson Memorial Hospital. During his term as State Representative he was instrumental in the successful efforts to reform the state's judicial system and in the 1971 session, he sponsored, among others, two major bills that were signed into law. One was the marijuana felony-misdemeanor bill and the other, the nonpartisan election of judges bill

Photographs and negatives of the Drake Lumber Company show buildings, equipment, logging operations and mill workers. Also included are images of the Gaston Drake family. Includes five index pages with hand written descrptions.

Reminiscences, mainly of 1896-1926, of pioneer life, the 1920s boom, and the 1926 hurricane. Junior League members and journalist Nixon Smiley interviewed people who lived in Dade County prior to the 1926 hurricane.

Photographic prints with corresponding negatives of one and two-story single and multiple family residential buildings in Dade County. The buildings are for the most part small-scale examples of Mediterranean revival, mission revival, bungalow, and vernacular architectural styles. The largest grouping falls into the mission revival category, with some examples combining mission revival, pueblo, and Moorish detailing. Among the vernacular structures, there are both frame and masonry examples.

The collection includes correspondence, reports, research findings, newspaper clippings, administrative documents, photographs, video recording, copies of speeches, a commemorative photo album and other ephemera.

Materials in Box 1 relate to the commissioning of the submarine at Groton, Connecticut in 1991 and those in Box 2 relate to its decommissioning at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine in 2014.

Miami Pioneers Inc. records - 1936-1994

The Miami Pioneers Club collection consists primarily of  records pertaining to the group’s general operations since its formation in 1937 up to the 1990s, with the majority of the documentation dating from the 1940s-1960s. Among the records are minutes, financial documents, charters and by-laws, lease and insurance records, newspaper clippings, correspondence, event programs and other ephemera, bond stub books, and scrapbooks. Tax records, invoices, newsletters, board information, and data relating to ownership and maintenance of the clubhouse and marina dockage are also included.

Of particular value to genealogists and other researchers are the membership lists and applications which detail the family histories of early Miami residents. Two card files list names, addresses, and phone numbers of club members. Also contained in the collection are applications for membership and yearbooks from the Miami Pioneer Descendants.

The photographic prints include images of  Miami Pioneer Club activities, members, and the marina dockage, as well as historical prints of  Florida sites and reproductions of historical prints of the Kitchell family. Some of the photographs of Miami Pioneers Club members and activities are attached to 11 x 14 poster board with newspaper clippings glued underneath them.

Three scrapbooks, dating from 1968 to 1991, contain newspaper clippings, photographic prints, cards, and other ephemera. Ten audio cassette tapes hold recordings of club meetings at which guest speakers presented programs on various historical persons, places, and events. A large poster-sized family tree of the Shelley family is also contained in the collection. Also included are completed family tree forms which The Miami Pioneers Club distributed to its members in order to consolidate the documentation of early Miami families. Histories of Eastern Airlines and Fort Dallas are also part of this collection.

Bulk of the collection consists of scrapbooks with dated newspaper clippings, club announcements and invitations. The older of two minute books is in Kirk Munroe's handwriting, with dates from 1909 April 3 to 1911 February 14. The other minute book covers 1921-1926; the first four months again in Munroe's handwriting; later entries are typed. Scrapbook clippings are about activities and obituaries of club members as well as club events and yacht races. Years covered by scrapbooks: 1937-1959, 1961 and 1964. Club handbooks included are from 1910, 1926 and 1948

Scrapbooks of clippings include the question-and-answer format Column with a Hart; the Glamor Clinic series; and general articles written by Eleanor Hart as a Miami Herald staff columnist. There are a few letters from individuals and organizations, usually thanking Miss Hart for help with a project. During these years people were moving to South Florida from other states in great numbers, and the columns include much advice on adjusting to life in a new community, as well as providing a clear reflection of contemporary social standards for women
