Financial records of Pitcairn Aviation, Eastern Air Transport and Eastern Air Lines between 1926 and 1936 make up the bulk of the collection. Also included are board minutes, correspondence and personnel directories; civic activities scrapbooks, advertising artwork and personnel uniform sketches, newsletters, photographic prints and video and film recordings. These records represent only a portion of Eastern's holdings, as some were retained by the company or given to other institutions

Research papers on settlements and people in South Dade (Miami-Dade County, Fla.), from Larkins (South Miami) and Kendall south to Homestead and Florida City, during the 1800s to 1926.

The papers hold topical folders of clippings, manuscripts, typescripts, photocopies, correspondence and notes used by Jean Taylor in researching her book, The Villages of South Dade. Also includes oral history interview sound cassettes and notebooks, the typescripts for Villages of South Dade and for Culture in the Boondocks, and material for the classes that she taught on South Dade history. Also included is a student paper Jean Taylor wrote on the early history of Miami, with annotations by her teacher, Marjory Stoneman Douglas; five 1906-1907 issues of Gustav Stickley's magazine, The Craftsman, given to Jean Taylor by Patty Munroe Catlow; and a photocopy of the National Register nomination for Silver Palm schoolhouse.

The information regarding new construction contains correspondence with builders, blueprints, photographic prints, property feasibility analysis, surveys, deeds of trust and agreements with residential hotels. The collection also contains books and magazines published by the Women’s Press. Also encompassed in the collection are newspaper clippings and scrapbooks.

Buildings include Vizcaya, Gusman Center, Spanish Monastery and the Hialeah Water Treatment Plant. Also includes a steel arch from a never built industrial park at Tamiami Trail and SW 172nd Avenue.

Correspondence and documents pertain to ecological and environmental concerns for the mangrove swamp, canal, and surrounding area on the Hector property situated on Biscayne Bay at St. Gaudens Road in Coconut Grove. Supporting documents include land appraisals, land purchase contracts, permits, maps and designs. A set of photographic prints show damage to the property from Hurricane Andrew.

Some government publications and newsletters from various county and state organizations are also included.

 

Biographical Note: Miami-Dade County as a Hialeah Councilman, Dade County Commissioner, State Representative in the Florida House of Representatives and elected circuit court judge. As commissioner, Whitworth secured federal funds to reimburse the county for medical aid given to Cuban refugees at Jackson Memorial Hospital. During his term as State Representative he was instrumental in the successful efforts to reform the state's judicial system and in the 1971 session, he sponsored, among others, two major bills that were signed into law. One was the marijuana felony-misdemeanor bill and the other, the nonpartisan election of judges bill

This series of 35mm, 110, and 4x5 photographic prints document the work of the Dade County Parks and Recreation Department during the 1960s and 1970s. Included are images of the construction of recreational facilities (e.g., swimming pools), arts and crafts shows, festivals, sports events, camping, and employee activities.

Parks depicted include Camp Owaissa Bauer, Crandon Park, Matheson Hammock, Vizcaya, Suniland, Dade County Auditorium, Brownsville pool, Greynolds Park, Museum of Science, Palmetto Golf Course, Elliott Key Park (now Biscayne National Park), Crandon Park Zoo, Haulover Beach, Homestead Bayfront Park, Redland Fruit and Spice Park, Richmond Park, Trail Glades Shooting Range, Virginia Beach, and others.

Sports and recreation depicted include baton twirling, bowling, golf, picnics, camping, Junior Orange Bowl parade, flower shows, beauty pageants, Showmobile presentations, synchronized swimming, etc. (The Showmobile was a trailer converting into a portable stage.)

Hurricane and storm damage includes Flora (1963), Cleo (1964), Betsy (1965), and Inez (1966).
