The collection documents the evolution of colonialism and trade in the “New World,” showing the shifting geographic borders of various empires and kingdoms, the expansion of Atlantic trade and sea shipping routes, and the movement of people and goods.

Views of natural areas at Key Largo, Biscayne Canal, Linton, Stranahan Camp (Ft. Lauderdale), Alligator Creek (near Punta Gorda), Miami, Cutler, Key West, Coconut Grove, and Everglades. Includes natural areas, reclamation of land, and Tropical Laboratory (possibly the Dade County Agricultural Experiment Station).

Up to four photographs are mounted on heavy album paper. Beneath each photograph the photographers attached a photo number and caption, which are listed in the container list.

The collection consists of 65 drawings of piers, arches, reinforced concrete rods, and other details such as arch openings and pier abutments. The Long Key - Conch Key Viaduct drawings date from 1905 and 1906, the years of its construction. Also included are drawings of other sections of the Key West Extension.

Maps, surveys and drawings of various properties in Miami and the Florida Keys. The bulk of the collection are maps and surveys of the Florida Keys for the Florida East Coast Railway. The other maps are mostly of the Miami area and include Mary Brickell’s property, the Lawrence estate and other properties along the banks of the Miami River.

The majority of the maps are pencil and ink on linen and paper, a few sets are blueprint copies.

Images show the early twentieth-century construction of the Florida Keys Overseas Railway. Contains images showing some of the 4000 workers employed by the project, including African American worker and interior views of the camps constructed to house them, including Boca Chica camp, Long Key Fishing camp, and Quarry Camp. Image shows the building of the railway infrastructure and roadbed, as well as the technology used during its construction.

Letters and diaries written by the Gilpins while on winter trips to the east and west coasts of Florida. John R. Gilpin (JRG) wrote most of the letters, and his wife Emma (EEG) wrote most of the diaries. Their son Vincent (VG) wrote a few letters and diaries.

Correspondence, pamphlets, photographic prints and clippings document Charles Deering's interest in plant introduction, research and cultivation at his two Dade County estates. Included are letters and notes from John Kunkel Small, noted botanist and authority on the flora of the southeastern states; material on the building of the Cutler dwelling, with letters from its architect, Phineas Paist; and a folder of pamphlets issued by National Audubon Society, chiefly dated 1912-1916.

Scrapbooks of the Buena Vista estate and Japanese life and customs, 1900-circa 1909. Folder of preconstruction sketches for the Deering estate on Biscayne Bay north of Miami, and a turn-of-the-century photograph album on Japan. Buena Vista materials include two floor plans headed: Preliminary studies of house for Mr. Charles Deering, Miami, Fla. ; a photographic print of a building model; and eight watercolor sketches of different rooms, elevations, etc., signed by the architect Clinton MacKenzie of New York City. The Japanese album consists of a series of hand colored phographic prints showing traditional Japanese artisans, farmers and street scenes. They are numbered in Japanese and appear to have been commercially produced.

Most snapshots pertain to a mechanical sugar cane harvester that the Hubbells tried out in Moore Haven and in Cuba. Other views are of Moore Haven, Cuba, sugar plantations, and the Hubbell family.

Album appears to have been compiled by Henry Salem Hubbell.
