Part of Ralph Munroe Family collection - 1916-1971

Views captured in photographs reflect Munroe's nautical and family interests. Most are of Coconut Grove; the Barnacle (his home); people (his family, friends, winter tourists, Blacks, and Seminoles); water-oriented places (Miami River, Florida Keys, Bahamas, lighthouses, etc.), and maritime activities on Biscayne Bay (boat-building, his sailboats, wrecking, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, etc.). A few of the images were taken in the north, most likely Staten Island.

The Miami Herald “Historical File” consists of more than 340 11x14 in. or smaller photographic prints, mainly of places in Dade County. Most, but not all, are original prints. Many, but not all, were taken by Richard B. Hoit. Each folder in boxes 1 and 2 contains one or more photographic prints; folders arranged alphabetically by topic. Box 3 contains photograph albums.

Views of sports fishing catches (sailfish, billfish, sharks, etc.), fishermen and fisherwomen, and charter boat docks (Miami Beach Rod and Reel Club, Baker's Haulover, Bimini). Some views show crayfish and stone crab hunting at low tide, seining, leaping tarpon, a captured Killer Whale (dead), and the capture of a manatee (alive) for the Miami Beach Aquarium. Fishermen include Alexander Ott and Charles Thompson. 1910s-1939. Matlack's original album for this series was destroyed before 1974, for an unknown reason. 30 views.
