Material reflects the life and interests of members of two connected Coral Gables families during three decades. Photographic prints, clippings, brochures, wedding, birth and death announcements, postcards, menus and programs trace professional and political interests as well as family matters. Also included: Dr. William McKibben's autobiography; Erling Ayars' account of the 1928 hurricane assistance provided by his American Legion post; poetry by Olive "Polly" Beatrice McKibben and memorabilia from South Florida places and events: Orange Bowl, Miss Harris' School, University of Miami, Coral Gables Garden Club and others.
Sin títuloThe scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings selected by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. These clippings document private and public sector growth and development in the city, and issues that affected the community during that period. The Chamber's role as a catalyst for civic improvement is also documented.
Topics include: the controversy surrounding the legalization of casino gambling, tourism, the proposed north Dade jetport, Interama, the Greater Miami Foreign Free Trade Zone, the role of Afro-Americans and Cuban Americans, race relations and the Miami riot of 1980 following the acquittal of the police officers charged with the murder of Arthur McDuffie.
Sin títuloThe collection contains a series of Whitehead’s diaries spanning the period of 1938 to 1981 (1941-1949 are not included). The diaries are filled with detailed, if taciturn, descriptions of Whitehead’s daily activities; every action, from eating breakfast to getting his car serviced, is given attention in the diaries’ pages. For example, each trip to and from Miami Beach is described, as well as Whitehead’s trips to South Florida’s restaurants and attractions.
The two photo albums in the collection are the product of a 1951 trip through Florida and the Keys; they offer interesting views of typical tourist destinations during the period. A series of color photographic slides from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s are concentrated solely on South Florida. Subject matter include views of Miami International Airport, Crandon Park, Hialeah Park, Lincoln Road, and a fashion parade along Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road.
