Biographical history

During World War II, a contract between the War Department and Pan American Airways, included aviation navigation and meteorology cadet training at the higher education institutions, including University of Miami. Civilian flight training program were designed to expand the numbers in the air corps, the Royal Air Force (in England), and the Chinese Air Force. Pan American’s base school for development of trans-oceanic pilots was located in Miami. The only female cadet, Marion Small, passed the navigation examinations with high honors but was not permitted to get into a plane and chart a course.

Photographs show views of Central and South America, Nassau (Bahamas), and Jamaica. Also includes images of indigenous people, buildings, street scenes, markets, nature and wildlife in and around the Brazilian cites of Manaus and Belem in the Amazon delta. Scrapbook contains publicity stories and photographs, pertaining to classes taught at the University of Miami
