Scope and content

Prints document early cultural, social, economic, and political life in Miami-Dade County, South Florida and the Caribbean. Topics include Seminole Indians, land development, tourism, and agriculture. Prints pertaining to Jamaica and Cuba (including the Spanish-American War, 1898) make up the bulk of the Caribbean-area grouping. Many items were drawn from American illustrated weekly newspapers including Frank Leslie’s Illustrated, Harper’s Weekly, Illustrated London News, Gleason’s Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, and Ballou’s Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion.

System of arrangement

The collection, encompassing prints dating as far back as the sixteenth century, is arranged thematically, and by size.
