Family patriarch W. H. Combs owned the W. H. Combs Company, which was one of the largest undertaking establishments in the south. Mr. Combs was married to Lorena Jaudon, sister of Capt. James F. Jaudon, who was responsible for the construction of the Tamiami Trail linking Tampa and Miami.

Marcella Seiden, a recent arrival to Florida, enrolled in the new University of Miami for their opening 1926-1927 term. She, Gertrude Huebsch (her cousin), and Rose Shayne (future sister in law), also UM students, embarked on a motor tour in the summer of 1929, driving to Pensacola, New Orleans, Houston; on to the western national parks and San Francisco; down to Juarez, Mexico, and by ship to Havana, Cuba.

The Miami Beach Playhouse was a 400 seat stock company theater located at 1920 Alton Road in Miami Beach. Gant Gaither, owner and manager showcased several outstanding Broadway hits during this period. The theater closed in 1942 after Gaither was drafted into the army.

In 1911 F.C. Bush and Walter C. DeGarmo formed the Coconut Grove Development Company and subdivided Coconut Grove Park. It encompassed a large tract of land south of the village between what is now Douglas Road and Main Highway.

During World War II, American women aided the war effort by mending apparel, sewing and then raffling off finished items to raise funds, benefit soldiers, and help war victims. In Miami, the sewing corner operated out of the President Madison Hotel and Belmar Hotel.

The Hauser family moved to Detroit, Fla. (now Florida City) in 1914. They later moved to Miami, where Leo's father helped to build the Julia Tuttle Apartments and the Maimi Country Club clubhouse. Luelle Hauser taught in area schools, and at the University of Miami.

Miami Civitan was given its charter (No. 23) in 1921. In the aftermath of the real estate collapse and the 1926 hurricane the Club organized "Sunbeams and Shadows," a relief program coordinated with radio station WQAM, who donated free air time. Civitan members manned telephones at the station and received both donations and requests for aid. Miami Civitan has supported the work of many local institutions: Sunland Training Center, Salvation Army, youth service agencies, and worked with high school Civitan groups, sponsoring a college scholarship program.

Roxcy Bolton founded the Miami Chapter of NOW, Women in Distress, and Jackson Memorial Hospital's Rape Treatment Center. In 1969 she served as Vice President of the National Organization of Women (NOW). For her many accomplishments, she has been inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame.

Since 1978, Janet Reno has served as Stte Attorney of Dade County. Her recognitions include 1983-84 Woman of the Year, Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the 1981 Herbert Harley Award from the American Judicature Society.
