Photographs of Miami-Dade County parks. Black-and-white views of county, state, national, and private, not-for-profit parks in Dade County, Florida. Includes construction of recreational facilities, festivals, sports events, camping, employee events, and hurricane damage. Includes Camp Owaissa Bauer, Crandon Park, Crandon Park Zoo, Elliott Key, Fairchild Tropical Garden, golf courses, Greynolds Park, Haulover Beach, Homestead Bayfront Park, Matheson Hammock, Museum of Science, Redland Fruit and Spice Park, swimming pools, Vizcaya, and others

This series of 35mm, 110, and 4x5 photographic prints document the work of the Dade County Parks and Recreation Department during the 1960s and 1970s. Included are images of the construction of recreational facilities (e.g., swimming pools), arts and crafts shows, festivals, sports events, camping, and employee activities.

Parks depicted include Camp Owaissa Bauer, Crandon Park, Matheson Hammock, Vizcaya, Suniland, Dade County Auditorium, Brownsville pool, Greynolds Park, Museum of Science, Palmetto Golf Course, Elliott Key Park (now Biscayne National Park), Crandon Park Zoo, Haulover Beach, Homestead Bayfront Park, Redland Fruit and Spice Park, Richmond Park, Trail Glades Shooting Range, Virginia Beach, and others.

Sports and recreation depicted include baton twirling, bowling, golf, picnics, camping, Junior Orange Bowl parade, flower shows, beauty pageants, Showmobile presentations, synchronized swimming, etc. (The Showmobile was a trailer converting into a portable stage.)

Hurricane and storm damage includes Flora (1963), Cleo (1964), Betsy (1965), and Inez (1966).

Materials pertain to the history and activities of the Miami Garden Club. Includes information on the club's drive for the preservation of Simpson Park from development and the encroachment of the north - south expressway (I-95), 1937-1988.

Minutes, correspondence and reports pertain to the administration and civic activities of the Miami Garden Club. Photographic prints documenting the beautification projects are attached to the reports, 1926-1974.

Most of the records pertain to the production of the Heraldette, an internal paper for the employees of the Miami Herald. Photographs and some negatives of mostly unidentified staff members at work and company sponsored social events make up the bulk. Also includes art work and a mostly complete run of the paper from its beginnings as the Slick Edition.

Financial records and company documents contain shareholders' and directors' minutes, insurance policies, mortgage deeds, contracts, leases, promissory notes, abstracts of titles, advertising rates and statistics.

Personal records of John S. and James L. Knight include biographical information, editorials, and photographs with prominent public figures such as John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

A group of photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., completes the collection. Some of the images were shot in Miami by Miami Herald photographers, but most are wire service shots from the Associated Press.

Some events are recorded on VHS tapes.

Clippings, brochures, photographic prints, programs and other memorabilia relate to the activities of the Miami Junior Women's Club and its members. Mostly arranged on loose scrapbook leaves, The bulk of the material dates from 1943 to the early 1960s.

A substantial portion of the records trace the early development of the agency through the correspondence that Dolores Gamble maintained with local agencies, blind clients and students, government officials and private individuals. Additional files document her involvement with music associations for the blind during the 1970s. Other folders contain the agency’s fund raising activities, media relations, reports and surveys, financial documents, annual reports, newsletters, photographic prints, scrapbooks and newspaper clippings.

The Miami Pioneers Club collection consists primarily of  records pertaining to the group’s general operations since its formation in 1937 up to the 1990s, with the majority of the documentation dating from the 1940s-1960s. Among the records are minutes, financial documents, charters and by-laws, lease and insurance records, newspaper clippings, correspondence, event programs and other ephemera, bond stub books, and scrapbooks. Tax records, invoices, newsletters, board information, and data relating to ownership and maintenance of the clubhouse and marina dockage are also included.

Of particular value to genealogists and other researchers are the membership lists and applications which detail the family histories of early Miami residents. Two card files list names, addresses, and phone numbers of club members. Also contained in the collection are applications for membership and yearbooks from the Miami Pioneer Descendants.

The photographic prints include images of  Miami Pioneer Club activities, members, and the marina dockage, as well as historical prints of  Florida sites and reproductions of historical prints of the Kitchell family. Some of the photographs of Miami Pioneers Club members and activities are attached to 11 x 14 poster board with newspaper clippings glued underneath them.

Three scrapbooks, dating from 1968 to 1991, contain newspaper clippings, photographic prints, cards, and other ephemera. Ten audio cassette tapes hold recordings of club meetings at which guest speakers presented programs on various historical persons, places, and events. A large poster-sized family tree of the Shelley family is also contained in the collection. Also included are completed family tree forms which The Miami Pioneers Club distributed to its members in order to consolidate the documentation of early Miami families. Histories of Eastern Airlines and Fort Dallas are also part of this collection.

News clippings, photographic prints, programs, members' handbooks and other memorabilia record the activities of the Women's Panhellenic Association of Miami. There is a list of past presidents on the  flyleaf of the 1941-1944 scrapbook. The 1953-1969 scrapbook has retirement notices and funeral eulogy for Mary B. Merritt, longtime historian for the Association. Miss Merritt was Dean of Women at the University of Miami from 1926-1955.
