History
John Thomas arrived in the Miami area from England as an adventurer in 1863, his brother, Charles arrived with his family in 1875. John Thomas Peacock homesteaded in Coconut Grove and held a variety of county offices, including Dade County Sheriff, Tax Assessor from 1879-1881, and Road Commissioner in 1890. John Thomas, popularly known as Jolly Jack gave his name to Jack's Bight, which later became Coconut Grove.
Charles Peacock operated the Peacock Inn, originally called Bay View House in Coconut Grove. In addition to his business and real estate interests, Peacock served at various times as Dade County Tax assessor and collector, Justice of the Peace, and County Commissioner.
