Charles Brookfield papers - circa 1920-1988?

Correspondence, clippings, photoprints, articles and files reflect Brookfield's interest as a Florida Keys lodge host, writer, environmentalist, fisherman, marine archaeology enthusiast, treasure hunter, and real estate investor. Correspondence includes letters on the early efforts of the Audubon Society to secure a portion of the James Deering estate as an Audubon bird sanctuary. Photographic prints are of the Bahamas, Elliott Key, and Florida, and date from the 1930s-1980s; most are identified.  Also included is a typed transcript of TMS Winchester's 1694 log book and the Captains log of the Dunkirk.

Brookfield willed his house to the Tropical Audubon Society. The Society in turn presented the historical material to HASF in 1990.

Gift

As a separate holding, the library has 34 diaries from the McCormick family, dating from 1884 to 1914, which Brookfield acquired from an unknown source.
